False active shooter social media post causes community stir in Chester County – Daily Local

PARKESBURG — A man is in custody following an accident Friday involving a stolen vehicle, which led to a brief foot pursuit by police in Parkesburg. The incident caused community panic after a post on social media falsely claimed there was an active shooter incident and lockdowns at local day care centers. The post quickly went viral, and police and the day care centers were deluged with calls.

It started on Friday, June 17, when police were called to investigate an accident at the intersection of Maple and East Bridge Streets, just before 7:30 am The driver and his male passenger climbed from the overturned vehicle and ran from the scene. Police pursued them on foot, taking the driver into custody a short time later in West Sadsbury Township.

Authorities said there was no immediate threat to the community, contrary to inaccurate social media posts of an active shooter incident.

Arrested was Kyle Laird, 25, of West Sadsbury Township for multiple criminal and traffic offenses. His male accomplice remains at large. He is being held in the Chester County Prison.

Investigators are asking that anyone with video surveillance / home security systems in the areas between First Street and Eighth Street to review footage between 6 am and 7:30 am, Friday, June 17, 2022, for suspicious activity.

Police were on the avenues investigating reports of two men, wearing dark clothing and carrying a red / dark colored backpack, walking the avenues and acting suspiciously just before 7 am One report had both actors wearing face coverings / masks. Minutes later, police received a report of a stolen vehicle from Third Avenue.

Police suspect that sightings between Eighth Avenue and First Ave. were the car thieves. Anyone with information on these individuals, or residents discovering video of this activity is asked to retain the images and contact Detective Rodney Discher, 610-857-3535 or 610-383-7000.

Police were assisted in the investigation by many witnesses who stayed in the area and assisted officers with valuable information and eyewitness reports. Parkesburg Police were assisted and thanked the Oxford Borough, East Fallowfield Township., West Caln Township. and the Pennsylvania State Police.
